Conversations With My Daughter #23

December 2011

Just been to see Alice’s debut theatrical performance in The Very Grumpy Innkeeper in front of a sold-out crowd of other nursery parents.

She did a very subtle, nuanced performanced as a king (or a star, we weren’t sure as she was wearing a crown with a gold star on it, and she’s not consistent in her answers), which was all very mainstream, proscenium-arch theatre, until she veered into avant-garde, deconstructionalist, Brechtian theatre when she spotted Sarah and I, and broke the fourth wall by yelling “That’s my Mummy and my Daddy!” and ran into the audience and into our arms. Very post-modern, acknowledging the audience whilst in character. I bet Kevin Spacey doesn’t do that sort of thing.
